Chocolate Quiz: Answers

November 1, 2011

Chocolate Quiz:  Answers

Q 1 – The correct answer was Yes

Yes, indeed it does! Five fluid ounces of red wine and a 1.5 ounce chocolate bar both contain about 200 milligrams of polyphenols. Polyphenols are very potent antioxidants found in such things as dark grape juice, tea, and chocolate.

Q 2 – Being in love

According to the research of pyschoanalysts, women release phenylthylamine (PEA) into the brain when they are in love. PEA is an endorphin, and chocolate is chock full of PEAs.

Q 3 – The correct answer was slows brain waves

While smelling chocolate does make you feel good, scientifically it has been proven to slow brain waves. What does that mean for you? Most of the time our brains operate at a frequency called beta waves. When brain activity slows to alpha waves we feel calm and alert. Bring on the chocolate after that stress-filled, two-hour commute!

Q 4 – The correct answer was Yes

Cocoa trees have traditionally been found under the canopy of the rainforests. Chocolate companies have, over time, tried to mimic this growing the cocoa trees in plantations to increase production. But recently, studies have found that cocoa beans produced in the rainforest are far superior to these “home-grown” versions. Because of this, some chocolate manufacturers have begun campaigning to save the rainforest. Now that’s an environmental cause to support!

Q 5 – The correct answer was 38 milligrams

So, phooey on all those who say chocolate is high in caffeine! Did you also know that chocolate contains other forms of weaker stimulants such as theobromine? Theobromine has been found to be a muscle relaxant, and it can help, in a mild way, to lower blood pressure. By the way, it is theobromine in chocolate that makes it dangerous for dogs and cats to eat.

6 – The correct answer was iron

Cocoa is also an excellent source of potassium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, and manganese.

Q 7 – The correct answer is Yes

Luckily, this is false. Not only is chocolate low in sodium, it is high in potassium, which is important in keeping the body’s level of sodium down.

Q 8 – The correct answer is  0.7 to 1.4 percent

So, if you have only that one chocolate bar a day, that’s far less calories than if we have a handful of peanuts or several cookies. One of the big differences being that chocolate is satiating- you feel full after consuming some. However, cookies are primarily carbohydrates, which produces insulin in the body. This in turn causes you to feel hungry again after a short period. Thus, you may eat more than you intended.

Q 9 – The correct answer was Yes

The glycemic index rates how quickly sugar is released into the bloodstream, and thus how easily it is utilized by the body as energy. Any number below 50 on the index is considered good because the body will utilize that glucose being released. Milk chocolate has a G.I. of 45.

Q10 – The correct answer was vegetable oil

Whenever the product contains vegetable oils you want to beware. Many vegetable oils contain trans-fatty acids, which have been linked to all sorts of health concerns. Well, enjoy that chocolate bar.
